Before I started reading "After Dunkirk", the thought crossed my mind; "Can Lee Jackson keep my attention outside of his "The Reluctant Assassin" (Atcho series) books? He's already shown himself to be a master of writing books in the Cold War Historical Fiction Thriller genre in those 5 books. Can he do it again with a World War II thriller? Simply put, being the master tale teller he has established himself to be, YES !!! Lee Jackson puts the reader on the beaches of Dunkirk in the midst of difficult retreat after a British support mission to aid Belgium and France after the Nazi march across Europe to the Atlantic Ocean and English Channel. The story line closely follows two families (One British and one French) after the evacuation of only approximately 60% of the troops who were pushed back to Dunkirk's beaches. Two of the Littlefield brothers are left stranded when the evacuation has to abruptly end. Another Littlefield brother and a sister are involved in the war effort at home in Britain. Both brothers in France intially make believable escape and evasion efforts with the help of the beginning elements the French Resistance. Ferrand Boulier, and his two daughters Amelie and Chantal along with their extended family of cousins and fellow French patriots assist in the E & E of the Littlefield brothers.However, neither brother is aware of the others escape. In a most believable piece of writing, Lee Jackson entertwines all of the characters in France and Britain. If you enjoyed The Reluctant Assassin books, you'll find this book a great read. The pacing is perfect as are the characters and their actions. Lee Jackson has earned another 5 Star rating. Just as others have done, I've pre-ordered the sequel, "Eagles Over Britain". Great read but I believe has its share of historical license. I had the opportunity to live in France with a true member of the Resistance. He summed it up best when he said "After the war everyone was in the Resistance. But during the war when I needed a place to hide or something to eat, no one was in the Resistance. " Many brave French Patriots gave their lives for us to be free. Looking forward to book 2.
